The Golden Chippy was once rated the best restaurants in London, so for a chippy, it must be pretty great. I had a look online and I had seen quite a few posts about this place, it has won ‘best chippy of the year’ for about 400 years running, so I thought I should check it out.
The entrance, tired, it looked really tired. It is as if no one cares about it, it really doesn’t take a lot to clean the outdoor section. As we are talking about cleanliness, generally it wasn’t an issue, but a quick once over wouldn’t go amiss. When you take in how expensive the food it here, you really do start to notice the small things, which drags the whole experience down.
This is where I was sat. The great weather really saved the general ambience of this place, other than that it was dead. The furniture seemed worn out, to a certain extent that adds to the ‘old chippy feeling’ but once again for the price, you expect a bit more comfort.
This was it, the whole meal. I won’t say what it is exactly as chances are the prices have gone up even more. When I saw this though, I was underwhelmed. The chips were stogy and tepid at best. It was like they had been covered in vinegar and left for a few days, no flavor at all.
Now the big one, the fish. It was fine, thee batter was nice and crisp but nothing else. If you are craving a fish and chips and you get this, you will be disappointed. If you are craving warm food this will fill you up, if you want a nice meal for good value, run a mile.
Conclusion – The Golden Chippy
Shame. Shame to the people who awarded these guys so many awards. Shame to the owners who set the prices. Shame to the Greenwich trust fund babies who sat behind me talking about how quaint this place is. Avoid it.
