Moshi Moshi, a (seemingly) small sushi place #in Liverpool Street Station. I have walked passed it so many times but I have never been in. One lunch I needed a treat so I decided to go in. It was surprisingly empty given the fact its in such a prominent location, but is there any real reason for the emptiness?
The entrance, it seems pretty un-assuming and understated. There isn’t much here to entice you in aside from being able to look in and see the sushi belt. Even then it doesn’t look like it is going to be worth it with a quick look at the menu outside, small portions at quite a high price-point. Sushi is always expensive in the city, but will this be any good?
Sitting at the sushi belt you do get a nice view of the sushi chefs. This is defiantly one of the benefits of moshi moshi, it is really nice to see your order come in and get prepared right in front of your eyes. Unlike other places with a similar set-up, this doesn’t feel like a gimmick, but instead more like a clever use of the space. Nice.
Before I moved over to the ‘mains’ area I had a few bits at the bar. This is the tuna. As you can see the amount of tuna per roll varied quite a bit, this isn’t a problem as ever piece provided a healthy amount, but imagine you get really unlucky and get a few slithers. Probably northing but defiantly something to bear in mind. The sushi itself was nice, nothing spectacular but it was pretty nice, more on that later.
At the bar again … the eel. I LOVE eel, I cant get enough of it, and this really did live up to what I was looking for. The eel itself was absolutely beautiful, a really nice natural flavor with some scallions to compliment it. The rice was, well, the same as the sushi, it was fine. If the rice was a little nicer this could have been one of the best bits of sushi I have ever had, but that was not to be.
The main seating area. If you are a fan of people watching (who isn’t) this is great, you can watch across the train platforms as you eat, a really fantastic view if you are into that kind of thing. The atmosphere was nice and chilled. Absolutely no problems with cleanliness either, it was spotless.
This little sashimi salad was my main. For what it is, it was nice. I am a massive fan of sashimi but I would expect a little more flavor from each individual aspect of the dish. All of the elements sort of blended in to one, I am not sure if this is a food quality issue or what but it was a bit of a let down.
Chicken gyoza as a side was a good choice. Other than the eel I had when I first walked in, this was the next best thing in terms of flavor. It had a really beautiful crisp texture on the outside which added an extra aspect of enjoyment to the dish.
Moshi Moshi – Conclusion
Fine. It is what you should expect from 90% of sushi places in London; slightly overpriced food that fills a gap of either craving or hunger. Would I go back? If I wasn’t paying I defiantly would, but I cant recommend it more than that. So much potential, but it fails in the most important aspects.
