Japanese cuisine is by far my favorite , delicate and light flavour paired with fresh ingredients is a combination I can’t get enough of. Having said this, there are plenty of Japanese places in the UK that are far from up to scratch. So, where does Taberu stand?
You could easily walk past Taberu and think nothing of it. Looking in it seems busy and cramped. As soon as you walk in you see that it extends further back with plenty more seating. Having said this, if you are looking to come here you should book a good table, or else you will be shoulder to shoulder with a stranger, not the best.
Every time I come here I get this, eel nigiri. You can get anything off of the menu and you will enjoy it, I really do mean that. I am always skeptical of non sushi places that do sushi, but Taberu is a real exception, the sushi here is something you shouldn’t miss, especially at such a great price point.
Tonkotsu ramen. This, along with everything else on the menu, was great. A very rich broth, perfectly cooked and tender pork slices with some nice fresh veg to accompany it all. Even though this is really nice, I would way go with something else, the other dishes do have a slight edge over the ramen.
Conclusion – Taberu
Taberu is one of the best places I have even been for Japanese food. When bringing in flavor and cost into the equation, I can’t think of somewhere that can offer such a great meal at a very competitive price point. If you are in Oxford, and want a fantastic meal for a great price, come here.
